Abdel Basset Sarout (Abdul Basset Saroot, Abdel Basset al-Sarout, Abd Al Basset El Sarwat #Abdel_AlBasset_ElSarwot , عبد الباسط الساروت), called the "voice of the Syrian revolution" in memories posted on social media, was killed in fighting in Hama. Some saw his death as symbolic of the overall difficulties facing the Syrian rebels or opposition. A review of social media posts, some by journalists, Syrian freelancers and commentators, provide an example of the impact of his death. His death came amid battles in northwest Hama that have grown in intensity over the last weeks. A video on June 1 shows him singing with young men and a photo from May shows him in a trench line. Initial reports said he had been injured on June 7.
Many expressed shock and disbelief. Farouk Alrifay, a journalist, writes that he didn't believe the news at first and calls on God to accept the fallen fighter:

Memories were posted by a spectrum of supporters of the Syrian opposition, including people on social media who support Kurdish groups ( For instance the Facebook profile of Mînyar Bonjaq Heverkî). "He was one of the noblest and courageous heroes o the Syrian revolution," wrote Yasin Al Haj Saleh. "He took up the path of peaceful protest, and then armed [opposition] during the siege of Homs, retreating to continue the fight after. His was a typical course of the Syrian revolution. A former goal keeper for a Syrian football team, he was martyred today."
Bachar al-Halabi recalled that Abdel Basset's life embodied the tragedy of the revolution, from its inception to its conclusion. "From a place of hope, singing a song of freedom, a love of life, and a struggle against the tyranny of sectarian jihad. Even in the darkest days of the reactionary days...the course of his life embodied a kind of religious folklore rather than a religious ideological commitment, and it was taken as a hope that we might have entered into a new horizon in events on the Syrian scene. This did not happen."
The Facebook site SouriaLi recalled that Abdel Basset had been a goal keeper for the Syrian tam Karame and that the name of the team was symbolic of the dignity of the revolution. The report notes that the Syrian government put a bounty on his head and tried to assassinate him three time. Images of Abdel Basset were posted, some showing alleged scenes of mourners, and others showing him earlier in life as a "revolutionary goalkeeper." Unsurprisingly pro-Assad regime sites and social media condemned him.
Abdel Basset had a Facebook fan page. It announced his death in the afternoon of June 8.

He also noted that Abdel's brother had been killed in 2011 and his father in 2012, another brother in 2013 and two others in 2014.
On another post, signed by Omar Alhariri, the following:

Shiraz Maher writes "Another huge figure of the Syria revolution, Abdul Baset Sarout was killed whilst fighting around rural Idlib/Hama. Sarout has an interesting story starting from the earliest days of the revolution. He was originally from Homs and played as a goalkeeper for Syria’s under-19 national team. When the uprising began he joined the protest movement and quickly became known as a songbird of the revolution, leading many protests...For a while Sarout stopped fighting and went to Turkey but then he returned and became increasingly hard line. He adopted ever more radical and hardline positions, expressing more sectarian and extreme views. But he was not an outright “jihadist” as some will suggest...In 2017, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham even arrested him. But to study Sarout’s journey is to study the arc of this bewildering and constantly metastasising conflict. For Syria watchers his death is simultaneously a huge moment symbolically, but not that important practically."
